Why “darbiya”
Darb (درب) is Arabic for route, or path. Our name — darbiya, دربية — comes from one of the most famous paths in Arabia: the Darb Zubaydah.
The Darb Zubaydah is a pilgrim road of more than 1,400 km from Kufa, in today's Iraq, to Makkah. It is among the oldest trade routes in the Arabian Peninsula and one of its most prominent pilgrimage trails. It carries the name of Zubaydah bint Ja'far, wife of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, who paid for many of the wells, cisterns and rest stations that made the crossing possible. Twelve centuries ago, travellers trusted that road with their lives because every station along it was laid with care.
Today Saudi Arabia is reviving the Darb Zubaydah under Vision 2030 and has submitted it for UNESCO World Heritage status. You can still stand beside its stone cisterns in the desert near Rafha — read our story about walking the road or explore Rafha.
