Umrah cost from Bangladesh: what you really pay for

Ask five agents in Dhaka what Umrah costs and you will hear five prices. Usually all of them are honest. The difference lies in what each package contains: how close the hotel is to the Haram, how many nights you stay, which month you travel and how many people share a room. This guide breaks the cost into its parts, so that you can compare offers line by line.

The five parts of an Umrah budget

• Flights. Usually the largest single cost. Direct flights from Dhaka to Jeddah take about seven hours; flights with a stop are often cheaper but longer. Fares rise sharply in Ramadan and during school holidays.

• Hotels in Makkah and Madinah. The part that varies most. The price follows the distance to the Haram, the star rating and the season.
• Transport inside Saudi Arabia. Airport transfers, the journey between Makkah and Madinah by road or on the Haramain high-speed train, and Ziyarat tours.
• Food and personal spending. Meals, a local SIM or eSIM, gifts and dates to take home.

What moves the price most

Distance to the Haram. A room a few minutes' walk from Masjid al-Haram can cost several times more than one that needs a shuttle bus. For elderly pilgrims the closer hotel is often worth it; for a young group, a hotel further out with a reliable shuttle saves a great deal.

Room sharing. Packages are priced per person. Four people sharing a quad room each pay much less than two people in a double.

Length of stay. A 14-day trip does not cost twice as much as seven days, because the flight is the same. Extra nights in Madinah are usually cheaper than extra nights in Makkah.

Ways to save without spoiling the journey

• Travel outside Ramadan and school holidays if your dates are flexible.
• Choose a hotel a little further away that runs a frequent shuttle, and spend the difference on a longer stay.
• Share a quad or triple room with family.
• Book early; low fares and good rooms near the Haram go first.
• Ask exactly what is included: visa, transfers, Ziyarat, meals and the distance to the Haram in metres.
